The way I see it, its about this guy who's still in love with a girl who has left him (maybe she dumped him , or maybe she died). And now there is this new girl who loves him and he loves her too. But he still can't forget his old love. He's still thinking about her and crying for her and getting drunk over her memories. But he also understands the new girl loves him, and he's feeling maybe he's being unfair to the new girl by clinging on to the old one. He's trying to move on.
I could go verse by verse, but I think you get the general idea I'm trying to convey.
(Come to think of it, the situation kind of applies to Vampire Diaries as well. From Elena's perspective. Since she's trying to let go of Stefan and maybe give a chance to Damon)
Heard this about a week before that tvd ep aired, and when it came on I went positively crazy. Such a beautiful song.

I agree with that interpretation, except I think they're both still a little apprehensive about this kind of relationship. But they recognise that it could be so great. (like Caroline and Klaus).

I couldn't figure out why this song was so hurtful and beautiful for me all at once. This is exactly what is going on with me.... I think you have to love yourself before you can let go..... This is the "end game" if you will..... A-team... then Drunk.... then Lego House..... then Drunk again.... then Lego House again.... then Give me Love.

@Koz@Koz I thought the exact same thing... I think, he really wants to make this relationship work but he's having a hard time not comparing it to his previous lover and getting over her. For example, when he says 'fight my corner', he means he hopes his current lover will understand his defense about being unable to fully let go of his past, and that she'll work with him to move ahead and make what they have work. I love that the song shows how confusing it can be to figure out who you love...
