I think this is a leftist protest song about the political chaos in the late 60's (Vietnam War was specially relevant in the US) and the sense that while Americans were safe in their homes the world was burning on fire. "Cops say people stay inside their homes" is a clear reference to the street movements of students in protests against war.

@Takeusaway The Weather Underground was all the rage in those days and the band was making a political statement in favor of domestic peace and non confrontation. It might still be a valid debate now in light of how much more militaristic this society has become notwithstanding that horrendous illegal war in Vietnam.

@Takeusaway pretty sure the song is about escaping conflict in the world. The song was released in 1968 the same year MLK and RFK were killed. That decade had seen the killings of Medgar Evers, JFK, Malcolm X, amongst others. There were greater conflict happening domestically the 60s had more going on. It’s a really good song, I never thought of aversion to violence as destruction as “leftist protest”
