To me, and this is clearly subjective, this song describes the following:
A woman has lost her lover in an untimely death (I think suicide, but for no particular reason). She is devastated and wants him to come back. She has the choice to take her own life, or let go. She thinks about it and how death would come. Instead she let go. "And nobody heard" shows her understanding that there isn't an interactive afterlife. He wont come back. She lets the emotions flow and moves on. What a great song.
