And the World Turned Lyrics

Girl stood on the rocks with the water at her feet
the sun on her skin and a tear on her cheek
With her hand on her chest and the wind in her hair
Underneath her breath like a beggar's prayer she said

I miss you, come back to me
I wish you'd come back to me

But nobody heard
And the world turned and the world turned and the world turned

And thats when the girl reached in her pocket
pulled out a silver heart-shaped locket
Opened it up and stared for a while at her faded boy
with a lazy smile, oh how

I miss you, come back to me
I wish you'd come back to me

But nobody heard
And the world turned and the world turned and the world turned

And she walked to the deepest part of the river
And she thought about diving in
She imagined how the current would overtake her
How easy it would be to disappear

But instead she tossed the locket
In the cool, blue, water

That night in her bed, she let herself weep
She let herself cry herself to sleep
And there in a dream somewhere in the night
Saw the boy and the locket by the riverside, saying

I miss you, come back to me
I wish you'd come back to me

But nobody heard
And the world turned and the world turned and the world turned

I have a silver heart-shaped locket engraved with my brother's initials, who passed away a few years ago. I'm fairly certain this song is about a romantic relationship, but I can't help but think of that desperate plea I whisper when I think of my brother: "I miss you, I wish you'd come back." And the request from both sides of the spiritual realm in vain... the world just turns and nobody hears.

This song destroys me. Gabe's lyrics are so poignant and beautiful that I couldn't help but get emotional when I heard it for the first time. This is one of those songs that you don't want to hear if you're going through a hard time in a relationship or thinking about the past when you hurt someone badly. Yet, at the same time, you want to hear it because it's the truth and we as human being don't always like accepting the truth. The storyline is brilliant. Wow. Beautiful, beautiful song- one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

To me, and this is clearly subjective, this song describes the following: A woman has lost her lover in an untimely death (I think suicide, but for no particular reason). She is devastated and wants him to come back. She has the choice to take her own life, or let go. She thinks about it and how death would come. Instead she let go. "And nobody heard" shows her understanding that there isn't an interactive afterlife. He wont come back. She lets the emotions flow and moves on. What a great song.
