"Put down the microscope, rip off my scales and take a look inside"

Reference to evolution, from land animals coming from the sea.

"But there's no future in... in being a dinosaur, and... and there's no future in the way I have been living."

The view that in todays modern science, it leans towards the idea there is no God/afterlife.

"But there's a hell of a past, so pull up a chair and I'll give you a good story, because I know you're not attracted to the truth."

Hell of a past, refering to the Earths long history. Not attracted to the truth, religious people general don't like to believe evolution, or there is evidence that suggests evolution took place, and the earth and life is much older than the bible suggests.

(Sorry, I'm uber bad at converting thought into words, but hopefully someone could do a better job)

Doubtful. There is no science which proves evolution; it is called the theory of evolution because it is only scientific theory unlike adaptation which is considered scientific law. Darwin was a Christian anyways my friend; however, I am more inclined to see the song as the speaker yielding to someone either internal or external because he or she has tried to hold on to the past for much to long. I say that because that is what I relate to in the song.
