And if it's attained, it will probably lead to heartbreak so he spends time enjoying a life (metaphrically dancing throuh it) filled with lust knowing that it will never be true love. It's a temporary high for him and it's all he believes can be attained so he goes with it. In essence, he is a quitter because it's safer to take one day at a time and not aspire for real love that always fails (him). I could be way off, but that's what the song means to me.
