This song, I believe it speaks about having lost your lover. Who "had to go" as in, passed away, and because the afterline is always but a wonder, there's no way of telling "if you'll ever see me again."

And now, for the one remaining alone - who no longer knows the feeling of safety, seeing how his lover was suddenly taken away from him - his life feels like a read to nowhere, carrying a cross (representing burden).
