Initially, I thought this song was about a breakup, or loss of a loved one. I still do, but now I also think this song is about suicide.

This sounds to me like a breakup - like he's been miserable in this relationship, and has known it for awhile, but is finally getting out. But this is followed by:

And this is the opposite - he doesn't want to leave, and can't breathe without the other person around.
So I think its about suicide - the love of his life has died, and he can't function without her - so he's decided to leave - kill himself - so he can be complete again and happy - with his lost love in the afterlife.

The chorus strikes me particularly hard at the moment, because my mom was really sick, and nearly died, and is still fighting cancer - and every time I think about losing her, I get this tightness in my chest, and I can't breathe. I can only imagine how much worse it would be to lose the great love of your life.
