As egotistical it might seem at a first glance, I think this song is more about a person who was overly optimisitc, or overly trusting, and their hopes were crushed or the person they put their trust into betrayed them. The person retreats into himself, he decides the world is full of terrible people, and he's the only one who matters, and he's the best person there is.

It sounds pretty selfish, but also sad. This sort of "From now on, I'm only looking after myself, screw them, I won't be crushed anymore"

@flyingpotato not sefish.. i disagree with you here.. thing is what he is claiming here that his feelings were crushed after all trying and make the other person happy but doubts and blaming kept on going to make this relationship he cared the most was screwed.. this song is all about that loss and his feelings which he cannot let go of because he loved with all he had..
