A wonderful song that contains great meaning, definitely my favourite song out of the whole "Pins And Needles" album. I feel the lyrics tell a story of two lovers parting their ways now they've lost everything that they once had together. Their relationship is falling apart and one seems to be in a long denial about it at first.
It sounds as if she was quiet about her own views, keeping her true feelings in 'secret'. While the other pushed them away and kept personal issues out of mind. The "I could never speak anyway. What you wanted to hear, I couldn't convey..." is where you get the main idea to this.
