Trying to explain a meaning for this song is a bit like listening to a child ask "Why" to every answer you give him. Even if you wanted to answer, the questions will never stop. Noah is a young man, finding his place in a world of hurt and pain. I relate to these lyrics from my own struggles and I love that he finds a perspective that doesn't answer his unasked questions, but rather describes what he's found on his journey. Time, Peace, Hate, Love all swirl around his heart, and though he desires the solid truth of it all, he can only share what he knows.
There are definitely religious undertones and there are some metaphors that I could guess at. Is "how pretty is the Middle of June" referring to the season and trying to leave us with something upbeat after a sorrow-filled couple verses.. or to this time of his life, June being in the middle of the year, and him being 20-something, almost-mockingly saying that this should be the "pretty" or "best" time of his life?
