Time is a cold wind blowing through the leaves
Of a tired old tree I sit [sing?] beneath
Where I think about the world and I don’t know how
What will happen to us now?

And peace is a ladder up to the clouds
That I’m wishing I could climb but I don’t know how
So would you lend me a hand to the promise land
Where I made[?] it glory bound

And it comes and it goes
Where it’s headed, no one knows
And we come and we go
All the saints and the liars, sittin’ by the fire
What will happen to us now?

And hatred is a sharp knife held by the blade
It’s cutting in your palm ‘til you feel no pain
And burning in your eyes with a righteous rage
‘Til the ashes blow away

And love is a thing that you can't define
Though you try with all your might through the riddles and rhymes
But it'll fly you like a kite; it'll throw you to the ground
But that's the best thing I have found.

And it comes and it goes
Where it’s headed no one knows
And we come and we go
Like the winter and the spring
Losing everything just to gain it back again

And oh, how pretty is the middle of June? [4 times]

General CommentTrying to explain a meaning for this song is a bit like listening to a child ask "Why" to every answer you give him. Even if you wanted to answer, the questions will never stop. Noah is a young man, finding his place in a world of hurt and pain. I relate to these lyrics from my own struggles and I love that he finds a perspective that doesn't answer his unasked questions, but rather describes what he's found on his journey. Time, Peace, Hate, Love all swirl around his heart, and though he desires the solid truth of it all, he can only share what he knows.

There are definitely religious undertones and there are some metaphors that I could guess at. Is "how pretty is the Middle of June" referring to the season and trying to leave us with something upbeat after a sorrow-filled couple verses.. or to this time of his life, June being in the middle of the year, and him being 20-something, almost-mockingly saying that this should be the "pretty" or "best" time of his life?

Being about his age myself, and searching for similar answers to my own unasked questions, I love this song and can't wait to see what else this kid can put together.

General CommentI'm pretty sure that the line is, "a tired old tree I sit beneath." This song is a tough one to find the exact meaning of, because Noah, I think, purposefully left room for interpretation. He wrote something that not only he can relate to, but a lot of people can. For example. "Hatred is a sharp knife held by the blade, It's cutting in your palm till you feel no pain." If talking about how hate hurts us more than the people that we, "hate." Another example is the last verse of the song. "Love is a thing that you can't define, though you try with all your might through the riddles and rhymes. It'll fly you like a kite it'll throw you to the ground, But it's the best thing I have found." explains love in the average human (who has found actual love), life. Noah is a brilliant song writer and my respect for him is extremely high.
