I think of it as the old "if you love something, set it free. if it comes back to you, it's meant to be" kind of cliche. Except it means something more when you actually do it. And the emotions that follow are probably harder to deal with than most people realize. To wait and wonder if somebody will come back? Agonizing, I would imagine. You wouldn't be able to say, "This is a test of your love! Come back to me!" No, instead you would send signals that you want your relationship to endure with this person, so that if and when it does, you can look back and revel in the fact that the love between the two of you was and forever will be real.
