I like to think it's about giving into the way the world works and working at the job that has no meaning to you and keeps you empty, but you do it because you need the money.

"Put up your barricades, theres money to be made Continue your charades, theres money to be made" -Pretend to be something your not and hide your feelings, toughen up, smile like you mean it, playing their games, you have to make money to live.

"What your asking for means the world to me, you draw closer as you whisper precisly." -Meaning that your freedom and your individuality means everything to you, and society/boss/whatever says thats exactly what they need to take away from you.

"Your saftey is assured behind those eggshelled walls of yours" -Meaning that there is security in the 9 to 5 job and it's less scarier than trying something different or new and not knowing where you will end up.

"Friends and family glide by on wings of faith Faithlessly I don't recognise a face Not a single face" -You see your friends and family nicely tolerating or being happy/exceling at their repetitive, meaningless jobs and you don't understand that at all. You don't recognize anything in them that you recognize in yourself.

"Take this sorry soul I've made enough of a mess on my own On my own" Feeling defeated and giving in, since you can't figure life out and have made a mess of it any how.Just going the path society tells you you need to go. Working that dead-end job for the money...

I'm fairly certain this isn't the real meaning of the song, but this is how I like to think of it because it's true for me. I'm too free-spirited for my own good...
