Lyric discussion by Auckland33

This song is about the sadness of depression (Autumn) and the loss of something (summer). The isolation (empty carlots, summer was my only friend) of Autumn and the pending winter, although associated with sadness, there is the small hope of happiness again in that it the new season or pending summer is just beginning or on its way. It is almost like there is a beauty in the pain of Autumn or winter (feels like its just begun).

This is a beautiful song and the beauty in the voice, music and haunting lyrics epitomise the gloom and isolation of winter and autumn, but the beauty in that isolation - that is seeing empty carlots. It makes one think of a new meaning to the album "Behind the Sun" as in, behind the sun is a darkness and isolation that in itself is beautiful.

Certainly. I also started feeling the same way, especially after reading your comment. Really beautiful album, this. Behind the Sun and Far from the Maddening Crowds are real stirring albums. The latest Thousand Mile Stare seems to come back to these roots.
