I think this is probably my favourite song by Mark Knopfler and I've spent many happy hours listening to this song. What I currently make of it is quite confusing as I'm not entirely sure what the song means to me but I'm going to give it a go. I'm also uninfluenced by others as this song has never had anything written about it :P
I think it's about how life changes and sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad but you should always enjoy the good times "before we say good bye" and "it all goes wrong". It also refers to how relationships change and even who your relationship is with changes.
