I completely agree. This is my favorite Avett Brothers song, because I know exactly what he is feeling.
At the beginning, he is trying to figure out how he could let this love slip away, how he could treat the person he loved so much so badly, and how he ended up alone.
In the middle, he is with someone else, but doesn't feel the same way about them as he did before. He just doesn't want to be alone, so he lies and makes it sound sincere just to have anyone.
But, alas, at the end of the day, he still regrets not being with one he really loves, and wants to find a way to bring that love back.
