What makes it easy to treat people bad?
Some things you say and you can't take 'em back
What makes it easy to run from the past,
like a child runs from the dark?
Which is the poison and which is the wine?
The scent and the colors are so much alike
And how much of each will it take to decide,
when you're at the table alone?
Where do you go when it's perfectly clear?
You might find your way, but you won't find it here
What makes it easy to sound so sincere,
when you know that you don't care?
Love gets lost
Love gets lost
Find my love
Find my love

How can you tell when goodbye means goodbye
Not just for now, for the rest of your life
How can you stand there with love in your eyes
And still be walking away
Love gets lost
Love gets lost
Find my love
Find my love
Find my love
Find my love

I wrote my comment over 4 years ago. This song still does an incredible job of embodying what it's like going through a break-up with someone you love. But life does go on, and you eventually find replacements. It's never quite the same, but that doesn't mean what comes next isn't better.

    God Bless the Avett Bros!

Wow. No comments. This song is...it is the epitome of what I'm going through.

From my prespective, Seth is singing about the desperate and desolate feeling of having left someone, but not really knowing if it was the right thing to do. You may still love the person, but something is drawing you away from that person. When will you ever really move on? You just want to love the person again, the way it used to be. Then you feel like running from this situation and the terrible feeling that encompasses you when you think about it. You just want to keep going, even though you feel like there is such a huge piece of you missing when you are away from that person.

You just can't find the love that you had. So you know that if you stay, it would be wrong. Without the love, it's so easy to treat that person the way you never intended on treating them. This adds to the dissonance and pain.

    What do you think?

I think I must agree with you Thomhead...I may not if only I didn't experienced breaking up with someone, whom I'm not sure up to now if what I did is right. Somehow I think that I still love the person, it has been a year and a half but it still haunts me. Sometimes I think I should go back to the relationship and mend what was broken between us, but I could feel something is missing, we lack of something I'm not sure what it is. I'm trying to find the love I've been looking for but the same thing happen again and again, keeping on hurting others and myself too.

I completely agree. This is my favorite Avett Brothers song, because I know exactly what he is feeling. At the beginning, he is trying to figure out how he could let this love slip away, how he could treat the person he loved so much so badly, and how he ended up alone. In the middle, he is with someone else, but doesn't feel the same way about them as he did before. He just doesn't want to be alone, so he lies and makes it sound sincere just to have anyone. But, alas, at the end of the day, he still regrets not being with one he really loves, and wants to find a way to bring that love back. Every single day I live the line, "How can you stand there with love in your eyes, and still be walking away?"

I feel I've recently been on the dumped side of this situation. Ugh. I try to understand why but it's impossible. I wish I could shout these questions at him but that won't help whatever he's trying to get through. I need to move on or friendship will be impossible.

    Love gets lost...

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
