I'm gonna go out on a limb and disagree with the other interpretations on here. The song does sound very melancholy, but I think it's more contemplative. I don't think it's a separation of lovers. I think it's an almost obsessive crush being realized by the speaker, and he thinks it's out there and crazy, and he wishes he were a "better man," as in a man who can resist these emotions and never act on them because he feels they are so irrational, and as such maybe should "run away and never be found," just take himself away from the object of his feelings so that they don't get stronger and he doesn't ever say anything to her [or him, that would be an interesting spin on it.]

I can understand the break-up interpretations of it, but I feel like a break-up interpretation is difficult to apply to the lines "My heart is elated / but my head is exhausted / this is powerful magic." That sounds very much like a man feeling an intense, sudden, love/crush/affection for someone. His heart is so happy and elated, but it's driving him crazy, he's going nuts just thinking about it and wondering what the f--- to do, should he ask her out, should he never talk to her... hence, his head is exhausted.

The "plans" section is difficult to figure – but I think it's more of a reflection on how you have all these plans in your life, before he met her he had plans to do stuff not involving her and her likewise, should they abandon those plans and get together?

Overall, the way I hear it is an expression of the duality of an all-consuming crush/love. Yeah, that feeling in your heart is awesome but it sure can make you feel like you're going insane.

My Interpretation

@Dacres You bring a good point. Many of us have had that feeling; this must just be someone who is expressing it so we all know it. This is a good way to think about it.

@Dacres Sorry I didn't mean to send that twice XD
