This is a great example of a late 90's pop song that is so catchy, upbeat, and easy to relate with that I think people are missing what the song is really about... drugs. If you read the lyrics, and especially read them without the catchy choruses and chant-along music, you can see the true meaning of the song: an especially mundane life, accompanied by the drugs that attempt to make everything tolerable.

Look at it this way, and read some of the lines: "Last night I had something so good; these days get so long and nothing to do", "we spend all day getting sober", "weighed by the chains that keep me." If chains are a metaphor for addiction, it's clear to me that he is referencing doing some kind of drug - and doing it a lot. Not to mention, has anybody thought about what the word "light" especially "blue light" means to the song? Here is a hint: a "blue light" section of any city is where there is a large consumption and distribution of drugs - particularly drugs such as ecstasy.

He says, "we just look a lot better in the blue light", which one would assume means 'we normally function on drugs.' He is in so deep to this lifestyle that literally he is weighed down by this drug consumption. To be "hating what I am after the light has faded" (the last line of the song) is evidence enough that the character is sad to return to a normal, mundane life after the 'trip', or light, has ended.
