Hanginaround Lyrics
I said "where have you been? I've been waiting for you
Cause last night I had something so good
These days get so long and I got nothing to do"
I been hanging around this town on the corner
I been bummin' around this old town so long
I been hanging around this town on the corner
I been bummin' around this old town for way too long
Just hiding from daylight
Watching TV
We just look a lot bettter in the blue light
Well, you know I gotta get you
But I'm stuck so tight
Weighed by the chains that keep me
She says "where have you been?
I've been lyin right here on the floor"
To be waiting for what is mine
To be hating what I am
After the light has faded

There's nothing like being stuck in a small town in the middle of nowhere. This song describes it perfectly---drunks and all.

this song would make anyone from a small town happy. i grew up in a tiny suburb of tulsa and then went off to college, got a real job, ect.. but this reminds me of high school and not knowing anyone outside your town and how much fun you can have even though you are young and naive and dont have many other experiences. you wanted to get away, but the small towns and nights of drinking and not accomplishing anything become really endearing later on.

This is a great example of a late 90's pop song that is so catchy, upbeat, and easy to relate with that I think people are missing what the song is really about... drugs. If you read the lyrics, and especially read them without the catchy choruses and chant-along music, you can see the true meaning of the song: an especially mundane life, accompanied by the drugs that attempt to make everything tolerable.
Look at it this way, and read some of the lines: "Last night I had something so good; these days get so long and nothing to do", "we spend all day getting sober", "weighed by the chains that keep me." If chains are a metaphor for addiction, it's clear to me that he is referencing doing some kind of drug - and doing it a lot. Not to mention, has anybody thought about what the word "light" especially "blue light" means to the song? Here is a hint: a "blue light" section of any city is where there is a large consumption and distribution of drugs - particularly drugs such as ecstasy.
He says, "we just look a lot better in the blue light", which one would assume means 'we normally function on drugs.' He is in so deep to this lifestyle that literally he is weighed down by this drug consumption. To be "hating what I am after the light has faded" (the last line of the song) is evidence enough that the character is sad to return to a normal, mundane life after the 'trip', or light, has ended.
BAM! thats what i always thought!
BAM! thats what i always thought!

This song is about feeling wasted and lost, and worrying about how your future is going to be... In the end he makes a conclusion, that he still has a lot of time to be "lost" before he makes a decision on how to go on with his life.

It's got the catchiest groove to it, too. I like to think of it as a reimagining of round here. One depicts the trials and hopelessness of a desolate setting, the other, the debauchery and fun of the same desolate setting. Both, in their own way, set the tone for their respective albums. The lyrics don't even begin to compare with round here, but the rhythm of the words will get you.
Favorite line: "I've got all this time to be waiting, for what is mine, to be hating what I am, after the light has faded"

cant believe there are only three comments on this song- it's such a pick me up song- even if the words aren't all light-hearted and shit it's just a song you cant help but get into and like dance to- my favorite part is when adam goes : well everybody trip..in the background kind of but not really.. keep THAT in mind- rock out.

wow....this is their biggest hit..in my mind and only 4 comments?
what fans we are..
to me this song is a story of being drunk and having some indepth thauhgts abnout life and how u can break out of the stage your in...and the line "wayed by the chains that keep me hanging around" -this line not in lyrics but on cd- the chains represent his stage of ~drunkness~

I'm shocked at the lack of comments, so here i am... commenting. The song describes small town life, the feeling of going nowhere, and the shit-load of fun you can have there. A great, feel-good song. I could listen to it all day.

wow, only six comments? I love this song, it has a great beat and tempo. The background music sounds so cheerful, it automatically puts me in a good mood.

I think it's about him having gone out the night before and gotten durnk and he's woken up with a girl
