This is a very good song, allowing many meanings to be found in it.

I find something in particular: losing your identity in another person, or in "couplehood".

A man needs physical affection ("can't sleep alone at night") but faces a troubled relationship. IMHO men often resort to being a wimp (escapism or passiveness) or a jerk (aggressive, blaming or insensitivity). Thus, they "just can't seem to get it right".

But trying to do right by a woman, setting aside your needs can result in "You haven't left me a mind of my own. But it's got such a hold on me, I don't think I could ever be free. How can I survive; I'm fighting to keep myself alive"

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

My Interpretation

Excellent analysis. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
