Personally I see this as them being extremely anti-war about America's war in Iraq ("Out in the desert").
How the government wants it, but it's not what we need ("It's what they want, but it's not what we need") but rather than protest, we all just pretend the deaths happening over there aren't really happening/just follow along, or rather "slipped into a coma" or "cover our eyes" or "you bait the hook and here come the children"
but that's just what I got. I'd love to hear other opinions!
