To me it sounds like he was involved in a relationship in which the girl was depressed and he tried to keep her holding on to life. This might be an extreme view though because it said she 'ran away' in the first stanza.
"I tried to hold her/keep her in my arms/she was so cold/and when she smiled I felt/my heart was torn apart" sounds like she passed away and he was heartbroken. "But I didn't see the sadness in her eyes." Also, "I'd send her letters if I had the chance/but there'll be no reply," possibly supports my idea.
