I'm pretty sure that this isn't about his dog... It's about absence from a loved one, as in being on tour and away from his girlfriend a lot. IDK, maybe that's just me.
I think it depends on how you want to read the lyrics.

If you're reading them literally, then it does in fact sound like it could be about a dog.

if i never let you out of my door [opened the door to let the dog out]
you'd never broke your leg in the park
if i never picked you out, this i'm sure [If he didn't pick the dog out from a litter]
you'd be home with a family keeping warm [someone else would have and the dog would be alive and well]
if i never let you out of my door [opened the door to let the dog out]
you'd never broke your leg in the park
if i never picked you out, this i'm sure [If he didn't pick the dog out from a litter]
you'd be home with a family keeping warm [someone else would have and the dog would be alive and well]
The lyrics to me sounds like...
The lyrics to me sounds like he misses someone he loves and wishes he could have them back.
you'd never have broke your leg in the park
If I never picked you out, this I'm sure
You'd be home with a family keeping warm
Are the lyrics that don't really fit, at least for me, when I first heard him say the last 2 lines I was confused, it actually snapped me out of the song because I didn't quite get it.
After someone mentioning it could be about a dog [or really any animal] it made a lot more sense.
I completely agree but i feel like it's more about regret. When he says "you'd have never broke your leg," it's like he's using it as a metaphor to having hurt this other person. The last bit, "if i'd never picked you out..." i perceive as meaning that if he had never fallen in love or gotten involved with them with the other person, they would be elsewhere and maybe even happy.
