I'd like to think this song gives off a warm, appreciative, feeling. The person expressing his feelings has a somewhat selfless love for his girl. He longs for the moments they get together and misses her when she's away. It's nice.
I see the song a bit differently, clara. To me, it is a song of regret. He's using a lot of "ifs" and it sounds like he regrets fighting with his love and driving her away. "If I never ... etc, you'd be home with the family keeping warm" I haven't quite deciphered the chorus yet, but at I get at least
If I never let you out of my door Never ((would have)??
If I never kicked you out Been so short You'd be home with the family keeping warm.
The last verse makes it sound like he still has hope for working it out.
the lyrics above i believe are mostly right. after many close listenings and watching live performances of the song, i think these are the correct words:
sorest of times got your thoughts on my mind the faster they come the less i remember
brightest of days you look three states away spit through my teeth let it roll down my chin and then i stare
if i ever let you out of bed without a catch to the center of your head well then i never deserved you from the start and you can let loose the warmth of my heart
if i never let you out of my door you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure you'd be home with a family keeping warm
sorest of times i can still find your light if i'm down on my fate if i'm hollow, i don't care
if i never let you out of my door you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure you'd be home with a family keeping warm
if i never let you out of my door you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure you'd be home with a family keeping warm
if i never let you out of my door you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure you'd be home with a family keeping warm
keeping warm keeping warm keeping warm
oops. i meant:
oops. i meant:
brightest of days you look three states away squint through the sun as you leave with the sparrows at dawn
brightest of days you look three states away squint through the sun as you leave with the sparrows at dawn
coldest of nights i sit shaking in fright spit through my teeth let it roll down my chin and then i stare
coldest of nights i sit shaking in fright spit through my teeth let it roll down my chin and then i stare
I've updated it with what you have there, but I still think it's a "kiss to the center of your head"
anyone else see this as a reference to his dog that may have died?
After listening a bunch of times, I still think there are a couple tweeks. Just my $0.02
@jmb5346: This does sound like it could be written for his dog.
In the sorest of times got your thoughts on my mind The faster they come the less I remember (you?)
On the brightest of days you look three states away You squint through the sun as you leave with the sparrows at dawn
On the coldest of nights I sit shaking in fright I spit through my teeth let it roll down my chin then I stare
If I ever let you out of bed wIthout a kiss to the center of your head Well then I never deserved you from the start and you can let loose the warmth around my heart
If I never let you out of my door you'd never have broke your leg in the park If I never picked you out, this I'm sure You'd be home with a family keeping warm
I the sorest of times I can still find your light If I'm down on my feet If I'm hollow, I don't care
If I never let you out of my door you'd never have broke your leg in the park If I never picked you out, this I'm sure You'd be home with a family keeping warm
[repeat]
Keeping warm Keeping warm Keeping warm
Thanks all for fixing my original submission. I was pretty off.
his dog? where did you get dog from? i feel like it is pretty obviously about a girl, and a relationship he is in... just my thoughts... like when he is saying if he never gave her a kiss on the head when she left the bed then he wasn't good enough for her... and that if he didnt have her, she'd be at home with a family.... maybe a reference to the fact that he tours a lot and he has to leave her.
After reading about the dog reference it actually does make sense.
"if i never let you out of my door you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure you'd be home with a family keeping warm"
he's talking about an accident. The dog got out and something/someone broke his leg. If he hadn't picked him out at the pound/shelter/whatever, someone else would've picked him up and he would've been with that family "keeping warm", and the accident wouldn't have happened.
I'm pretty sure that this isn't about his dog... It's about absence from a loved one, as in being on tour and away from his girlfriend a lot. IDK, maybe that's just me.
I think it depends on how you want to read the lyrics.

If you're reading them literally, then it does in fact sound like it could be about a dog.

if i never let you out of my door [opened the door to let the dog out] you'd never broke your leg in the park if i never picked you out, this i'm sure [If he didn't pick the dog out from a litter] you'd be home with a family keeping warm [someone else would have and the dog would be alive and well]

The lyrics to me sounds like...
The lyrics to me sounds like he misses someone he loves and wishes he could have them back.
you'd never have broke your leg in the park If I never picked you out, this I'm sure You'd be home with a family keeping warm
Are the lyrics that don't really fit, at least for me, when I first heard him say the last 2 lines I was confused, it actually snapped me out of the song because I didn't quite get it.
After someone mentioning it could be about a dog [or really any animal] it made a lot more sense.
I completely agree but i feel like it's more about regret. When he says "you'd have never broke your leg," it's like he's using it as a metaphor to having hurt this other person. The last bit, "if i'd never picked you out..." i perceive as meaning that if he had never fallen in love or gotten involved with them with the other person, they would be elsewhere and maybe even happy.
