After reading about the dog reference it actually does make sense.
"if i never let you out of my door
you'd never broke your leg in the park
if i never picked you out, this i'm sure
you'd be home with a family keeping warm"
he's talking about an accident. The dog got out and something/someone broke his leg.
If he hadn't picked him out at the pound/shelter/whatever, someone else would've picked him up and he would've been with that family "keeping warm", and the accident wouldn't have happened.
