The Weight Lyrics

I really think everyone is turning this song inside out looking for the meaning. I think it's simply talking about one man carrying a burden from many different people throughout the song. In every verse someone else lays more problems on him. Even the last verse about Fanny. She is the whole reason why he is even there (wherever that may be) to start with. But he realises while riding a train back to her that she's all he cares about. And he'll be damn glad to get back home. Whatever it's about...it's awesome!

@sm000 16 years later... not sure if you'll even see this, but for me you hit the nail on the head. This song always reminds me of my late father who took on many burdens and I totally get why he connected to this song as much as he did. No matter how we try to unload these burdens... we just take on more because we care about others and always find ourselves carrying the weight.

@sm000 funny, I see you just replied 5 mins ago.. I thought I was the only one here tonight. I’m listening to this right now because yesterday I found out that my best friend who passed away a few years was listening to “Rock of Ages” by The Band.(We had a falling apart out towards the end sadly, so I never knew this) I just have so much appreciation for this song.
