it kind of is like a relationship. the guy/girl is looking for a way out to get out of their relationship. he wants the girl to ultimately tell him why he should stay with her & nothing she does will kill him. If she promises him dignity for staying in a relationship where he feels like he's trapped & dying, then it might give him some leverage.
