I heard during the early years of Sabbath's formation (first 3 records or so), they would get together and ideas would just come to them; from a 5th invisible member. The song is based (very) loosely on this '5th member' who as many mentioned traveled to the future and tried to stop the apocalypse, etc. (perhaps by giving Sabbath the songs they wrote?).
Learning riffs... I agree; learn it note-for-note, trills 'n all; know it, learn it, then take it somewhere new!
