I think this is definitely about life changes and how they affect relationships.
I don't think he is happy where he is in life and it doesn't have to do with the girl he is singing to because he loves her very much, but he knows making the changes he needs to make for himself will "make her sad" (as in he might move away or need a break from being tied down). He doesn't want to hurt her but he has to do what he has to do. I agree it could be a move, career change, etc.
Beautiful song, and I agree-VERY emotional. Anyone who has been on either side of this type of situation couldagree with the bittersweet difficulty...
My favorite line is "what if it makes u laugh now but cry as u fall asleep" because I think we've all had moments like those.
