i'd say it's just about war, being alone and wanting to see the person you care about most in the world, but being so far away from them, so you find ways to remember them and cherish every moment you have had with them. To the point that the only reason he still fights is to make it back to her and that he doesnt fight for the reasons that they originally told him he was fighting for. All the things they told him were lies to get him to fight harder, thus the part "god bless you son, At least you tried" either that or he may have died. He has come to realize all that matters to him is her and that he wants to make it back to her, but hes unsure when he will make it back or if he will at all.
