If I'd've known it is the only time
I would see your face
Then we'd celebrate
When I'm alone living is only time
Till I see your face
Though it's not today

When I'm alone it is the only time
I will see your face
When I'm desperate
Now I'm alone building my holy shrine
Where I'll see your face
And then contemplate

If everything that's new is a lie
It's that same damn morning
And the same damn sky

All I do brings me close to you
Whatever you'd ask me to
Though I can't take back what's taken from me
All I see becomes a part of me
And even if you don't believe
Well I'll see you where the river meets us

Fighting the tide that takes me home
Only dreaming of the day
When the world will go away
A world that's full of pain
We fight the fight so that might know the fear of our mortality
If you breathe between the waves
You will end up in a lake

All I do brings me close to you
Whatever you'd ask me to
Though I can't take back what's taken from me
All I see becomes a part of me
And even if you don't believe
I'll see you where the river takes me

[Violin Solo]

And everything that's new is a lie
It's that same damn sun
In the same damn sky
And everything you thought you knew is a lie
God bless you son
At least you tried

All I do brings me close to you
Whatever you'd ask me to
So I can't take back what's taken from me
All I see becomes a part of me
And even if you won't believe
Well I'll see you where the river takes me

All I do (Just brings me close to you) (All I do)
You were all I'd see (Becomes a part of me... a part of me)
And all I do (Just brings me close to you)
You're all I see
And I'll see you when the river meets us

General CommentDefinitely one of my favorite Hurt songs so far, the violin solo kicks ass.

My interpretation is that this song is about how the singer doesn't know where is he going with a relationship any longer, and he isn't sure whether to keep trying or just give up, so he is just going where the river (of life by my interpretation) takes him. Everything the other person in the relationship tells him about how they are going to change is a lie, they are still the same person with the same mindset/philosophy towards life and that will never change. Throughout all of his questioning, all that he does reminds him of the relationship, brings it closer to him and makes it more a part of him, but at the same time he cant get back what he has already lost and isn't sure whether he wants to lose even more.

Like I said this is definitely one of hurts sweetest songs so if your a hurt fan and haven't heard this song yet check it out.

General CommentI think it is about a guy who has had someone close to him die and he is living everyday waiting for the day that they will meet again. My other interpretation is something along the lines of a guy who saw a girl that was astonishly beautiful and he can't forget her so he wants to see her again maybe? I think thr most accurate is my first interpetation.

General Commenti'd say it's just about war, being alone and wanting to see the person you care about most in the world, but being so far away from them, so you find ways to remember them and cherish every moment you have had with them. To the point that the only reason he still fights is to make it back to her and that he doesnt fight for the reasons that they originally told him he was fighting for. All the things they told him were lies to get him to fight harder, thus the part "god bless you son, At least you tried" either that or he may have died. He has come to realize all that matters to him is her and that he wants to make it back to her, but hes unsure when he will make it back or if he will at all.

    Off of wiki:
Tao is a concept found in Taoism, Confucianism, and more generally in ancient Chinese philosophy. While the character itself translates as 'way', 'path', or 'route', or sometimes more loosely as 'doctrine' or 'principle', it is used philosophically to signify the fundamental or true nature of the world. The concept of Tao differs from Western ontology, however; it is an active and holistic conception of the world, rather than a static, atomistic one.

So pretty much he views the world as one only full of hate and violence, but all he wants is the love that he has shared with her and he hopes that one day all the hate and violence dissappears and that we all can live together in a way that he has with his loved one.

thats what it seems like to me. i could explain it further and more accurately but i dont have the time.

General CommentI am in agreement with Seprough--my first interpretation about the song is that one he loved has died and his path is just leading him toward death when he will be with her again. OnlyAMyth, your interpretation is interesting too. Thanks for the info on Tao!

General CommentThis song is about everything we think we know about anything. The government and record labels would not produce this album because it exposes the fact that everything we grew up being taught by this system of governmet and religion is a form of decetion that keeps us under their control. Given the meaning of the rest of the songs I gather that's the meaning behind this song. The album is titled "Goodbye to the Machine." God bless you son, at least you tried.

    General CommentHello all,

This is my favourite Hurt song because its actually extreemly spiritualistic in nature. I believed the song was about someone close dying to him and his difficulties coming to terms with it. While I was correct in the nature of the song, it is actually a lot more deeper than initially thought.

During an Interview on 8/14/2010 (during a festival for 105.7 at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater St. Louis, MO USA - to be exact) J.Loren was asked bout the meanings behind many of his songs. He stated that most of these songs were about love, life and death and how we all lead different paths but ultimately we all have the same fate (death). This is hinted by their hidden track on "Goodbye to the machine", "Flowers".

J.Loren stated that one of the songs closest to his heart is in fact Fighting Tao. This song is about someone extreemly close to him (he did not say who, but I have heard that it is someone who is a father figure to him - i do not know if his father is still alive) that was terminally ill. He stated that this person lost faith before death and this song is a clash of belief systems during this moment. It's almost a person trying to convince someone that although they are not well, there is always God at the end of the tunnel - but the dying person takes their doubts to the grave, causing J.Loren to also feel doubt toward his maker.

    Hope this helps!

My InterpretationI think this is the battle with religion, and how hard it is to seperate whats right and wrong due to moral conflict. "Everything thats new is a lie" <- religion was new at a time, the only things thats been the same is the sun.
