I think that this adds to a stormy imagery describing both wind, and season. If the season was fall, the leaves would be orange and RED, a reference perhaps to a broken or injured heart?
as for "the freeze frames keep him warm" i'm pretty sure this is talking about snapshots (either pictures or memories) that keep him nostalgic unless warmth is a metaphor for hope.
