Maze broken
She’s runnin’
Feet swollen
He’s commin’
She’s stolen
And before he even knows it she’s gone.
Tea cups sittin’ on the hollow tree stumps
He’s dumped, and can’t seem to swallow these lumps
The beat goes on…

Same fire
New passion
Old flame
Trade it in for a summer fling
There’s nothing like that sweet old song…

Tip over
Root the trees
Bend the leaves
Blend in with the open wound
The freeze frames keep him warm…

The day’s frost is scrapped off the weight loss
The new sign that says keep off
As he speeds off into the storm…

Out of sight the lighting strikes him twice
He’s peeking out on the pike and cheatin life
Pealing out on the lawn

Now he’s idling
His time is dwindling
In his mind he’s figuring out life’s about the little things
And his labyrinth
And all his magnificent can only keep the mike straps
The princess is innocent
She doesn’t belong…

(I never thought I’d miss you)
They had a ceremony where he put her in a bridle, the headstall…
She stopped to think for a minute, and in a split second went AWOL.
(I never thought I’d miss you)
He draws in the chin as in a expression of resentment or scorn

He’s pullin’ on the rains, the bridle, the shower the storm
The maze, the high tower, clouds are at war…
The rains, the bridle, the shower, the storm…
The maze, high tower, clouds are at war…
The rains, the bridle, the shower, the storm…
The maze, the high tower, clouds are at war, clouds are at war, clouds are at war…

(I never thought I’d miss you) – repeat 3x

I think the reins/bridle thing is about the marriage, which is kind of what broccoliandcheese was saying, it's control. Before a woman is married, she's "free", and when she's married she's not, because it's her job "as a woman" to look after him and make sure his needs are met.

He but the bridle on her, took control of he, made her his, like a horse. Marriage.

But, I think she cheated on him, the entire song sounds like he's chasing her.

"He’s dumped, and can’t seem to swallow these lumps The beat goes on…"

Wow i cant believe no one has commented on this song, one of his best, sage is freakin amazing.

Well here goes I think this song sounds to me like Some guy didn't treat his wife that well so she ditched out on him. He chased after her but she's gone and now he realizes how much she meant to him.

I think the part about the tower and the princess is about him trying to keep her all cooped up like a trophy wife and the same with the bridle and headstall like he was just a prize stallion to him. Then the start is her taking off, the song is written non chronologically? I'm not so sure about the same fire new passion old flame traded in for a summer fling. anyone wanna help me out on this?

and also i think a couple of the lyrics are wrong up there I think its 'out of spite the lighting strikes him twice' maybe? and also 'and all his magnificence can only keep the mice trapped..'

you're right about the lyrics, it is "out of spite the lightning strikes him twice" and "mice trapped"

you can check it out at sagefrancis.net if anyone doesnt believe me...

I believe that it is NOT written chronologically because it's telling the story as she is running...

Same fire New passion Old flame Trade it in for a summer fling There’s nothing like that sweet old song…

^---- with that i believe he's saying that he possibly cheated on his wife, but it was never as good as it was with his wife, hence 'Theres nothing like that sweet old song'..

Ok I think it's "reins" (like the reins on a horse) rather than reins because it matches the bridle imagery. But it's really genius because "rains/reins" works for both the horse imagery of making the wife something of a bound-up trophy and for the storm imagery associated with the building tension and pressure that will break when the rainstorm hits. Very clever line.

i think the word "reins/rains" is supposed to work both ways. hes talking about a storm which is obviously often associated with rain but he also talks about a bridle and reins are part of a bridle. also bridles are used to contoll horses so that kinda makes me think this song is about controll. maybe he tried to controll this woman too much and thats why she ran off. theres obviously a lot more to it but i havnt been able to figure it out.

I forgot to add I love the "I never thought I'd miss you" part.

Anyone have any idea who it is or wth it's from?

"Tip over Root the trees Bend the leaves Blend in with the open wound The freeze frames keep him warm"

i think this should be rearranged to look like this...

Tip over Root the trees Bend the leaves Blend in with the open wound The freeze frames keep him warm

I think that this adds to a stormy imagery describing both wind, and season. If the season was fall, the leaves would be orange and RED, a reference perhaps to a broken or injured heart?

as for "the freeze frames keep him warm" i'm pretty sure this is talking about snapshots (either pictures or memories) that keep him nostalgic unless warmth is a metaphor for hope.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
