This is one of my favourite The Corals' song. I don't know what the writer meant, but this is what I see it as.
"He" has been abandoned by something he cherish/love/enjoy and he has a strong desire to get it back but he doesn't know how. He's tried. But seems lost. He gets so disillusioned that he starts to think of himself as a "stranger in this life". He knows and admits it's his fault in the first place and longs for just another chance. But it never came and till now, he's still "haunted by yesterday's desire".
This is what I think it means, only because I want it to. It is how I relate to it. The "he" obviously being me, and the "something" can be anything you want it to. A person, an object etc. Mine being a dream.
