Outside the factory gates
For hours sit and wait
For you to turn around
And show me there's a way

I am a stranger to the life
Enchanted by the wonders of the night

I stepped into the dark
With all the broken hearts
I'm searching empty streets
Distant and apart

I am a stranger in this life
Haunted by yesterday's desires

When we meet again
You'll know I am to blame
When you see me standing
In the rain

They say they can see
What I'm supposed to be
But what is right for them
Don't mean it's right for me

I am a stranger to the life
Enchanted by the wonders of the night

?
As I watch from my window
Across the waterfront
But they will never know

I am a stranger in this life
Haunted by yesterday's desires

When we meet again
You'll know I am to blame
When you see me standing
In the rain

I am a stranger to the life
Enchanted by the wonders of the night

When we meet again
You'll know I am to blame
When you see me standing
In the rain

In the rain, in the rain
In the rain, in the rain
In the rain

    My Interpretation

This is one of my favourite The Corals' song. I don't know what the writer meant, but this is what I see it as.

"He" has been abandoned by something he cherish/love/enjoy and he has a strong desire to get it back but he doesn't know how. He's tried. But seems lost. He gets so disillusioned that he starts to think of himself as a "stranger in this life". He knows and admits it's his fault in the first place and longs for just another chance. But it never came and till now, he's still "haunted by yesterday's desire".

This is what I think it means, only because I want it to. It is how I relate to it. The "he" obviously being me, and the "something" can be anything you want it to. A person, an object etc. Mine being a dream.
