They believed they were unbreakable, untouchable, and that they were in it for the long run(you and me against the world, and you promised me forever more) He or she promised the singer that they would always be together and now that they're broken up, the singer is struggling to comprehend the whole thing.

Had boyfriend for two years, it was all good, a little fighting towards the end, but even right before the end he told me not to worry, that we'd be good in the long run, and over time, he had told me plenty of times that he would love me always. now he doesn't love me; we're not together.
I don't think the singer's boyfriend(girlfriend) cheated though, I think there would be more scorn in the song. This more of like mourning the loss of the relationship, the death of their future, and the confusion of it all. =[
