This song makes me thing of the slow deterioration/destruction of a person like the first commenter stated; however I don't think of James/Bella/Edward at all.
The song is a great song without twilight; so without twilight, my interpretation is a conflict between a person and thier addiction. from the 'drugs' point of view.
"I won't soothe your pain
I won't ease your strain
You'll be waiting in vain
I've got nothing for you to gain
I'm taking it slow
Feeding my flame
Shuffling the cards of your game
And just in time
In the right place
Suddenly I will play my ace"
Its almost as if the drug is telling its user "You shouldnt take me, nnd if you decide to, eventually I will destroy you."
anyways.. that probably doesnt make sense to anyone haha.
its just what comes to me when I listen.
i can agree with you with the whole twilight craze. i dont think that this song should be praised because of the mere fact that it was on a popular movie. it is a great song regardless. but i dont think its about drugs (although that is a cool way to think of it) i believe its about a relationship in which one person is not good for the other, naive, person.. but yet they both have a strong interest in the other.

omg thank you! i love that someone actually acknowledged and interpreted the song outside of twilight. I absolutely agree with your take on its meaning.

while i like the context it was used in twilight, I also agree the song should not be interpreted in twilight terms, it's not a twilight song, it just happens to be in the movie. And I really like your interpretation of it, too, it works really well. I like the more straightforward satisfying slow revenge interpretation myself, just something really seductive about that kind thing to me

Wow! I think you nailed it right on the head...Your interpretation made me actually think about "my own" translation of the lyrics for the very first time (I actually learned of this song not through "twilight" but from watching my fellow dancers on So You Think You Can Dance (Ps...for those of you who truly love this song I highly suggest you look up the dancer's performance on youtube...its a beautifully breathtaking rendition! And the choreographer admitted that "Twilight" was her inspiration!))

Anyways...I tend to digress. ;) What I meant to...
Anyways...I tend to digress. ;) What I meant to say is that I do agree the song was written with no regards to the twilight series whatsoever. Moreover, I will say that I am definitely siding with "drug interpretation" argument! ;) Makes complete and utter sense to me in every aspect!....including:
"stolen power" = a sense of security not owned but "borrowed" (often seen in those who "overcompensate" in an attempt to hide their real weaknesses, as well as those in possession of "energy" that is undeniably unnatural- aka. energy gained through substance abuse.)
And! I find this "choice of carefully selected words" even more compelling:
"YOUR spine is ablaze"
"felling any foe with MY gaze"
To me, "Your spine is ablaze" is yet again a reference to the effects that drugs have on the nervous system....superhuman strength, power, etc.
Then in an ever so eloquently beautiful yet subtle "reveal" she continues with "felling any foe with MY gaze"..."MY gaze"....wow! To me that is more than telling of the true nature of this song. (The drug itself is responsible for the heightened "senses" and doesn't shy away from taking credit for it.."Yes you feel this incredible sense of power and inner strength, and every foe felled is done at the hand of the illusion I create!)
