This may be me projecting my own experiences, but I believe the song is about someone who has attempted suicide and is now trying to start over and make things work.
As for the second verse it sounds like the singer was trying to make his life work solely to spare someone else the pain of losing him, and that reason for living isn’t giving him what he need to go on.
“Yet everyday I live for you, still I'm not alive”
With this line it even makes it sound like he’s wondering if the people in his life want him around.
“Give me a sign, one reason that I should stay”
Finally, I see the third verse as him not believing that anyone can understand him (or would even want to understand him) or make a difference in his life, so why try?
“Are you ready to know just who I am?”
And I see the last line of the third verse as him trying to push others away.
