I'm more familiar with the Bonnier Rait version, I finally looked up his version to see if he actually wrote it that way and she didn't change it. I take a great songwriter to put themselves in that place, not to mention a little bit of guts to release a song written that way in 1971.

I love how John Prine wrote this song and sings it from a woman's perspective. He does it so naturally that it doesn't seem odd.
