The Byrds – Eight Miles High Lyrics 12 years ago
Gene Clark in an interview has said that he wrote this song in the 60's with Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. He said Jones didn't care anything about having his name as one the credits as writer. I'm sure that Jones would be the one to know about Liverpool being known as rain gray town.

David Bowie – Five Years Lyrics 12 years ago
The line "If the black hadn't pulled her off she probably would have killed them" what I don't get is the word black. Is he talking about a black person or is black some kind of British slang for a policeman or something else. Anybody have an idea?

Boston – More Than A Feeling Lyrics 13 years ago
I read somewhere that the song the singer is thinking about in More Than A Feeling is an old 60's song Walk Away Renee by The Left Banke.

Deep Purple – Hush Lyrics 14 years ago
I commend Deep Purple for recognizing a great song, but the original song by Joe South without the overpowering organ is much more emotional.

Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics 15 years ago
The line "There's a shadow running through my days like a beggar going from door to door" seeems to speak of loneliness. The part about going from door to door sounds like failed relationships. Anyway it's a great song.

David Bowie – Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) Lyrics 15 years ago
The best version of this song is the one Bowie did with Frank Black at Bowie's 50 birthday celebration.

PJ Harvey – Dress Lyrics 15 years ago
The line "I'm falling flat my arms are empty". I always heard this line to say "I'm 45 my arms are empty". To me the 45 line says more about a woman reaching middle age and coming to grips with loneliness.

John Prine – Angel From Montgomery Lyrics 15 years ago
I love how John Prine wrote this song and sings it from a woman's perspective. He does it so naturally that it doesn't seem odd.

The Beach Boys – God Only Knows Lyrics 15 years ago
The greatest love song of all time. It reminds me of George Jones song "He Stopped Loving Her Today". It is of course a different genre but the feeling is exactly the same.

Leonard Cohen – The Traitor Lyrics 16 years ago
The rose is the womans genitals, the swan would be his. The line "run some wire through the rose and wind the swan" would be the woman asking him to have sex with her. He daily performs his "idle duty" but he doesn't love her. He has become an "enemy of love" for betraying his true love.

R.E.M. – Man On The Moon Lyrics 16 years ago
Louis Armstrong landing on the Moon might be the funniest thing I've ever read on the internet. I wonder if he took his trumpet.

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bad Moon Rising Lyrics 16 years ago
John Fogerty has been quoted as saying he wrote this song as a response to the reelection of Richard Nixon. It certainly turned out to be true.

R.E.M. – Driver 8 Lyrics 16 years ago
The line
"She is selling faith on the Go Tell crusade" refers to a Christian crusade run by a guy named Rick Gage. He is called the Billy Graham of small towns. He holds revivals in small southern towns. As a side note his main side-kick is some guy who is Elvis Presley's step-brother.

Bob Dylan – It's All Over Now, Baby Blue Lyrics 16 years ago
The line
"The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets"
Refers to Andy Warhol

The Who – Naked Eye Lyrics 16 years ago
I always wondered about the line "There's only one who can really move us all". It sounds like he's talking about God. If so, it is one of the few times I can remember a Who song talking about God in a positive way. It is one of my favorite Who songs, I never hear it played anywhere.

John Prine – Far From Me Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a very sad song, the boy knows Cathy no longer loves him but he doesn't know what to do about it. A great song.

Vic Chesnutt – Florida Lyrics 16 years ago
Nobody has commented on this great song so I will. Supposedly Vic wrote this song about somebody he knew who moved to Florida and ended up commiting suicide by shooting himself in the head with a nail gun. Anyway, despite the gloomy story it is a great song by a great songwriter.

R.E.M. – Monty Got A Raw Deal Lyrics 16 years ago
Obviously the song is about Montgomery Clift who was a great actor who happened to be gay at a time when it was kept secret. After his car wreck he had a bad scar on his face that left him depressed. He eventually died alone from slow self-destruction. It is a great song. The title is itself a joke. There once was a silly game show called Let's Make A Deal. It was hosted by a man named Monty Hall.

Leonard Cohen – Night Comes On Lyrics 16 years ago
The first verse sounds like the singer is visiting his mothers grave. He is thinking about suicide, but his mother reminds him that it is wrong. In the second verse his father encorages him to choose life. By the third verse his children have made an apperance making his thoughts of suicide appear to be selfish, which of course it is. In the final verse the mood of the song changes. The melody becomes brighter. Our hero wanders down to the bar and seems to be enjoying life. He's taken to heart the advice given to him by his mother. This is a great song. I love how Leonard's voice had deepened on this album.

Mission of Burma – That's When I Reach For My Revolver Lyrics 16 years ago
The cover done by Moby definitely says "sign his name". I haven't heard the original in many years so I'm not sure. The next line "cry and whispers sing in muted pain". Which is a great line, is changed by Moby to "sign it with complete community" which I think sounds kind of lame.

Bob Dylan – License to Kill Lyrics 16 years ago
Dylan used to include this song in concert whenever a space craft was in orbit. I think he was going through a luddite anti-technology phase. I don't know if he has commented on space travel in recent years. Tom Petty's version at the 30th Anniversity Concert is quite good.
