I've never quite understood the meaning behind this song, but I think it's talking about finding your place in a broken world. Sometimes in our attempt to belong somewhere, we deny ourselves for what society says is true. "Face to face alone all the time", I believe this line is talking about who we are when we're alone & nobody's looking.
