I love this analysis and I think you are correct in that this is a description of war.
However, one could still use this whole song as a metaphor for break up or lost love. Many break ups feel like the world is ending. But you somehow survive, but then need to guard yourself against future pain, by hiding in your bunker. With booby traps all around.
