Exile is an ironic play on words. In his meaningless sociality he is exiled from himself.
The "we" could be anyone but in this song it is a actual group of friends.
He loves his friends and the moments but he recognizes their futility.
"We have grown, time has flown, and the only thing I've learned, I want a life now of my own (something meaningful and real)."
"We sit around drinking tables, stabilized and keeping score, but my mind is somewhere out the door (there must be something more)."
"That's my year spent in exile, second guessed (by himself) and dresed up in tatters, my birth feet didn't take this path (this is not his destiny) and I'm still looking for a life that matters (more than chit chat.)"
First a few understandings:

"I've overstayed (time to go home) awhile..."
