Clearly it's about a guy who has screwed up and doesn't know what to say to make things better. He doesn't know what he had till he lost it. He doesn't actually know what he did but he knows he screwed up and doesn't know what to say. Typical... same ole story but great song.
I personally take it slightly different. I see it more as he and the girl have been together for quite a while and have just gotten to that point. They're no longer the same people as they were in the beginning. "I can't tell you baby what went wrong." tells me neither of them really did anything per say. "I can't make you feel what you felt so long ago." Tells me they're no longer in that happy, giddy, oh my goodness the world is so freakin awesome phase. They've grown apart and they didn't realize how amazing their love...

@suthernlass oh, he knows. He knows what he did was wrong. He just doesn’t want to admit it to her, take accountability so he’s trying to minimize it by saying “ Don't know what it is I did so wrong”. He’s actually a coward because accountability takes courage.
