This song is most definitely about the California Music Industry. Why? Because the Eagles have said so. California and the Music Industry has always been steeped in the drug cult so therefore the many comparisons. It's talking about how they bring you in and use you up and make money off of you. You become dependent on that life style because music is all you know how to do... you can check out any time you want but you can never leave.... where would you go? At the time this song was written... you had to go to California for rock producers. Now it's a bit better... there are choices. It's a great song and one could pretty much compare it to any addiction in life... What ever works for you and how ever you want to apply this song to your life is cool. That's why they do it... for the fans. |

This song is timeless and I've been listening to it since the late 60's. It's really great. It could be about just anybody but I think it's about a female he may have had a crush on but she was way out of his social circle and she let him know it. The female thought because she had money, pearls and presteige she had it all and looked down on everyone else. When her relationship went south she was left alone and with no money to keep her on her high horse... she became one of "us" that she had been making fun of earlier. How does it feel to be one of us he asks her. The chrome horse is her "high horse" but could also be her fancy cars and her diplomat is most likely her rich husband. She went from rich parents to a rich husband and when he dumped her she had no way to make it on her own. Bob Dylan was one of the greatest social commentaters of his time and he's still very much "current". |

Great song and she's the right one to sing it. Once my lover and now my friend... just says it all. She doesnt' want to get burned by him again but she's not ready to give him up totally so she seems willing to just "play" at being with him....thus the "shadowboxer" description. I can relate.... |

To me this song is about a fast woman and this guy wants to be in love with her but he knows she's a player. That's why love bites. He knows all the ill feelings the "relationship" with her generates but he wants it while at the same time not getting too close to her . He knows he'll only get hurt in the end. |

Clearly it's about a guy who has screwed up and doesn't know what to say to make things better. He doesn't know what he had till he lost it. He doesn't actually know what he did but he knows he screwed up and doesn't know what to say. Typical... same ole story but great song. |
