they know that anything can happen while hes away because nothing is fair in love and war. he has a few tangiable photos and letters that he reads over again but them "fallin apart" recognise the pain in himself that it was not his choice to go away and there is nothing he can say that will reassure the loved ones at home that he definately will be coming home.
