It seems to me (possibly only me, but who knows) that the third verse ("That night I saw her again...") is a dream. So he only imagines that he touches her hand, and they talk all night. Then the dawn comes and he wakes up, and he wants what he had in the dream.
Reminds me of an experience I had earlier this year (oh no, not one of these again!), when I met a girl on the train, we had a wonderful conversation, then I had to get off, and neglected to get her phone number, or even her name for that matter. I still regret it to this day...
