In my opinion, I think this song is about coming out of captivity, or restrictions.
"There’s no way
This closet’s keeping me here" could mean 'there's no way this is gonna hold me back from being what I want to be.'
"I’ve got to break away
This gun is all that I’ve ever known" could mean that all he's ever known to be sure or true is the 'gun' which could symbolize....something.
"They took my lover away" What took his lover away? That's the question. Drugs? Guns? Money? People? Disease?
"Now I have upped the stakes
This confession was my only sin" Whatever it is, it's really important to him, so he's 'upping the stakes' and says that this confession was wrong, but everything else he'd done before was right.
